The event was initiated by the Kazakh side in order to develop mutually beneficial cooperation and practical interaction in the field of intellectual property within the recommendations of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on trade and economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
On September 27, 2021, within the framework of the implementation of the regional program of the European Union "Central Asia – Invest", representatives of Kazpatent met with international experts on the registration of appellations of origin of goods and the definition of promising geographical indications.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss topical issues within the framework of the regional project "Regional integration and capacity-building to improve the competitiveness of Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the agribusiness and trade promotion in Central Asia - CANDY V".
The project's activities are aimed at improving the competitiveness of export-oriented enterprises in the Central Asian agricultural sector through the introduction of world-renowned tools to promote local products and territories abroad, namely, geographical indications. Geographical instructions contribute to the development of the tourist destination through gastronomic tourism, agrotourism, ecotourism, as well as increase the economic potential of the territories.
In the period from May 2020 to May 2021, the project partners and related stakeholders selected products that could be registered as GU and prepared a feasibility study. 1 product has been selected from Kazakhstan to participate in the pilot project, namely Almaty Airport. Promotion of the product as a geographical indication will increase the recognition of the region and contribute to the development of tourism.

Today, the first day of the webinar on the legal protection of intellectual property objects was held, organized by Kazpatent for the Republican Board of Legal Consultants (hereinafter-the Board).
The aim of the events is to familiarize SMEs with such an object of intellectual property as appellation of origin (AOI) and some aspects of the AOI registration procedure. AOI and GIs are means of promoting of local products, as well as in increasing the economic potential of a region and even of individual countries, developing the tourism industry, gastronomy tourism, which consequently has a beneficial effect on the economies of those countries as well.
In addition to the geographical origin or place of origin of a product, the legal protection system of an AOI seeks to protect the quality of the product, its unique characteristics and the factors involved in its production.
A new intellectual property object, Geographical Indication (GI), is currently being introduced into IP legislation. The draft law is under discussion in the Parliament.
